Do you give Plex write permissions to media library folders

Are there any reasons/functions in Plex that require write access to the folders in which the media files reside? I currently have it set for read-only access to these folders and dont notice any issues, but am curious if it causes problems.

And follow up, if I do give write access, what are the risks of Plex fouling something up?
