Zambia's Brain Drain. How bad is it?
In the short time I've been on this subreddit, I've come across quite a few posts from people who've been expressed their interest in leaving Zambia whether it's for work or study opportunities. Some have been dissuaded from it while others are encouraged to take the leap of faith. However, my interest in this topic is from the standpoint of the Brain Drain/Gain and how severe it is becoming or if this issue is particularly overstated. Data on Zambia's migration trends is very scant and most of it is hyper focused on professional migrants in the health sector ,a majority of which left in large droves during the economic recession of the 90s following structural adjustments and privatization. This trend has steadily continued in present day but again, data on it is quite fragmented especially when compared to countries that have tracked this phenomenon like Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Kenya etc (West African countries even have the colloquial term called Japa to describe this). From your perspective, do you think we have a growing issue with brain drain or is it still a relatively peripheral facet of our country's socioeconomic fabric? I've seen statements from so many African countries bemoan how the West and other middle income countries are 'stealing' our human capital but heard very little on how African governments actually plan on retaining said capital. To those who are leaving, do you intend to return? For those who did repatriate back to Zambia, do you intend on staying permanently?
